Hi there !
I'm a plus-size 22 yo woman. I've always felt like my size mattered to everyone. But in fact, the only one it mattered to was ME. And that's how it should be. No one else should give a damn about my outer shell. Inner beauty is what counts. Believing that gives me the strength to go out every day and shine.
I think perfection is all about perspective. Perfection changes and goes with the flow. It is defined by society and the ones who live in it. Who says stick women are beautiful ? We have. We let that definition be generated and flourish. Maybe we're coming back to our senses and finally realizing that health is beauty. Not stick figures or being so thin people can see your bones. Sometimes, when I see really thin girls, I almost feel sorry for them: they look fragile... like they,re going to break at any moment!
You are right, perfection has NO PLACE in modern society. It is much too vague to even be applicable. The word "perfect" has quite an effect on us. It can be positive or negative, depending on what it's definition is at the time. But I think, when it comes to a human being's appearance it can never be positive.
It is human nature to compare ourselves to others. But not to try, at any expense, to be like them. Comparing ourselves serves one purpose: to find out if we're normal or not. Nowadays, when people compare themselves to others, they feel threatened or impuned by social images of skinny (sometimes disgustingly so) girls / women on TV and in magazines.
Perfection is not only about physical beauty, it's also about acceptance. That title we crave so much, to be accepted, is one far more easier to obtain than society tries to make us believe. Is acceptance more valuable if felt by thousands of people by showing off your body in a magazine ? Or is acceptance more rewarding when a husband hugs his wife and makes her feel beautiful, inside and out ?
Perfection to me is a day to day thing. I define what is beautiful or acceptable in my life EVERY DAY. I agree... it's really hard, but to face reality and the vision I have of myself each day, earns me more and more acceptance from others and self-esteem from myself every time I look in the mirror... OK almost every time!
